In the year 1960 several masons who, because their work schedules required them to work at night, prevented them from participating in their respective lodges, petitioned the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for a Dispensation. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge referred them to the Jurisprudence Committee. This Committee, after investigation and due consideration reported favorably.

The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge approved the report and issued a Dispensation to the group as a U.D. Lodge. Under the direction of Past Master Leroy Anderson of Eureka Lodge No. 5, who was appointed as Acting Worshipful Master of the U.D. Lodge, began to formulate plans for the new lodge. The U.D. Lodge was given the name Prudence Lodge U.D. During the year of 1961, the group showed real determination and zeal towards accomplishing their objective. In a report, dated December 31, 1961, Past Master Leroy Anderson, Acting Worshipful Master, and Brother Luis Slinger, Junior Warden, petitioned the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the District of Columbia to be officially chartered. The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge voted favorably and the Charter was granted.

On the Eleventh day of June 1962, Prudence Lodge No. 27, Free and Accepted Masons, P.H.A. came into existence. With the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the District of Columbia, Curtis J. Blakely, Sr., presiding in the East, assisted by his cabinet, Prudence Lodge No. 27 was dedicated and consecrated.

Right Worshipful Grand Lecturer, William O. Stephenson, serving as the first Elected Master, declared the following Officers elected.

Right Worshipful Grand Lecturer, William O. Stephenson, Past Master Dewitt Drew, Acting Grand Marshal, assisted by Past Master Sheppard installed the Officers. The Most Worshipful Grand Master Curtis J. Blakely, Sr., and his cabinet performed the consecration.

On Saturday, November 26, 2000, the death angel alarmed the outer portals of Prudence Lodge No. 27 and its last Charter member, Past Master Freddie E. King, went home to be with the Lord.

After many years of laboring, Prudence Lodge No. 27 was honored with its first Most Worshipful Grand Master, Joseph D. Daniels, December 1990. And after many more years of continued hard work, we have our second Most Worshipful Grand Master, David A. McWilliams Sr, December 2009 . It is anticipated that we will have our third Most Worshipful Grand Master in 2017, as our own PM Phillip David currently serves as Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master.
