ABOUT CHARLES DATCHER LODGE NO. 15
In 1898, Brother Richard H. Jones (L-7); S.B. Moten (L-7); Charles H. Posey (L-7); L.H. Wayne (L-3); Paul R. Stewart (L-3); William W. Grymes (L-1); and Levern Hughes applied to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for permission to work under dispensation under the name of “Charles Datcher Lodge”. This dispensation was granted on January 3rd, 1899 empowering them to assemble and work after the manner of a Masonic Lodge. During that year, sixty-four (64) candidates were raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason.
On December 20th, 1899, a petition was made to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for Charles Datcher Lodge to be constituted a regular lodge according to the ancient usages of Freemasonry. The Petition for Warrant was granted on January 17th, 1900, when the Most Worshipful Grand Master Robert H. Terrell (then judge of the D.C. Municipal Court) duly constituted and dedicated Charles Datcher Lodge No. 15, F. & A.M., P.H.A., a lodge named after the first Grand Master of this Jurisdiction, Brother Charles Datcher.
The first officers of the lodge were: James W. Thompson (Worshipful Master); Samuel T. Craig (Senior Warden); William S. Fulton (Junior Warden); John Beckwith (Treasurer); and Alexander Hicks (Secretary).
From 1900 to the present, Charles Datcher Lodge No. 15 has played a major role in the leadership of Prince Hall Masonry in the District of Columbia. It has the distinction of giving this Jurisdiction five (5) most Worshipful Grand Masters; eight (8) Grand Worthy Patrons; and many leaders of other Allied and Appending Bodies. The lodge has won the Ritualistic Jewel Contest in multiple years (1922, 1930, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1999, 2012, 2013 and 2015). In 1999 and 2013, the lodge was rewarded by being named the Ritualistic Lodge of the Year. Through its charitable and scholarship programs, Charles Datcher Lodge has always made assistance to the needy of the community one of its top priorities.
Charles Datcher Lodge No. 15 gives thanks to the Grand Architect of the Universe for the guidance and Blessings we have received throughout our existence.
